Ariella’s Escape by Carolee Croft BOOK TOUR!

Title: Ariella’s Escape

Author: Carolee Croft

Genre: Epic Fantasy Romance

Ariella had always believed that the life of a warrior should include indulging in wine and men whenever they were on offer… And in Chaldea, the capital of the old empire, they certainly were.

Especially the man she finds in her bedchamber, a slave provided by her hosts to entertain her
in any way she wishes.

But when betrayed and surrounded by enemies in a strange land, there is only one man she
can trust—the slave who was meant only for her pleasure but is much more than he seems.

Demetrius had been captured in a battle at the age of fifteen, and slavery was all he had
known in his adult life. When his chance for freedom comes along, his fate is bound to the
noble warrior maiden whose voice and body he cannot resist. Duty calls him to return to his
kingdom, but the journey will take him places that will change him forever.

Together, they make their way through a den of thieves and an enchanted elf forest, but the
biggest danger of all may be their fiery attraction to each other and the secret that will draw a
dividing line between them.

It was strangely reassuring to know that he was not Chaldean, judging from his sun-bronzed
skin, fine eyebrows and long brown hair, a shade so dark it was nearly black. And his eyes…
like two pieces of a summer sky. She had always been a fool for a blue-eyed man. Judging by
his elegant speech, very likely, he came from a noble lineage but was held here as a hostage to
ensure peace with another kingdom.

“Then what is it, my lady?”

He sat down beside her on the bed, the scent of some innocent field flower with something
more heady and musk-like tempting her to get closer to his bronzed body. She tried to discern
his age… late twenties perhaps. His forehead was unlined, but there was something about him
that made him appear older, a world-weariness perhaps behind his charming and carefree
disposition.

There had been one or two times when she had bedded a man after less conversation than this,
but this was strange territory with too many possible complications, and she could not afford
to indulge herself on a whim. There was also his status to consider. As a slave, he was
obviously not free in his choices, and she could sympathise with that. Ariella knew she would
loathe being ordered to “entertain” guests in this manner were she in his place.

“Do my looks please you?” she asked tentatively.

“Yes,” he replied, a slight hoarseness in his voice
.
His eyes scorched her, and she had to look away.

“It’s just that… I do not wish you to do this merely out of a sense of duty…” she said softly,
“that is… if you did not want to…”

“My lady, I want to,” he said.

Scent of the Past by Erin Marie Bernardo BOOK TOUR!

Title: Scent of the Past

Author: Erin Marie Bernardo

Genre: Historical Fiction

A secret diary. A forgotten past. Another time.

When people think of time travel, they think of the clichéd manufactured kind. Of giant electronic machines with flashing lights and buttons calibrated to shoot you into the past with one press. But it doesn’t work that way. You need a reason, a connection, and—most important—a link. But you can’t choose when and why you go. That would be too easy, and we’d all be snapping our fingers in hopes of seeing lost treasures of yesteryear. It must choose you.

Close cousins Addison and Elissa live in present day New York City and lead somewhat ordinary
lives. When uncertain circumstances surrounding a set of antique perfume bottles sends them
back to eighteenth-century France, they must uncover the truth behind their travel.

Disaster strikes when Addison finds herself in a nearly identical situation to a mishap she
experienced in the present—the witnessing of a murder and release of a secret. Only this time the
truth could destroy the entire French monarchy. With Addison’s head on the line, the young
women search for answers before Addison suffers her unlucky fate twice. It is only when they
discover the haunting connections to life in the present, that they understand why they both were
sent, and why a repeating past...may not always be such a bad thing.

Just before seven, as the invitation requested, Léopold knocked on Addison’s door. She
answered, showing little enthusiasm. For all she knew this could possibly be her death march.
Elissa had told her not to show fear. She must act like her same exuberant self, otherwise she
would give herself away even before dinner. She promised herself she would escalate her energy
level once she met with the king. Léopold didn’t know her well enough to notice the difference in
her attitude.

They walked across the grounds and through the palace. Léopold said nothing. He was
simply her escort. Addison looked up at his face. He didn’t look cruel. In fact, he had a very kind-
looking face. But she understood that it was his job to obey the king of France, and all guards
took their oath seriously. Léopold was only following orders.

“We are here,” he said, opening a door for her. “Enjoy your evening with His Majesty.”
He bowed and slowly closed her in. She was in the dining room. It was an expansive chamber
normally set up with a long table to host dozens of people. Tonight, however, the space looked
relatively empty. The arrangement for her meal was more private. A small circular table and two
chairs. It would be a very intimate dinner.

Addison thought back on the choices she had made in life. Since coming to Versailles,
she had wanted nothing more than time alone with the king. Now she had it and didn’t want it.
She felt sick to her stomach. Why had she been so stupid? Why did it matter whether or not she
could say she had been with the elite? Kings, company executives, men of high society. None of
those relationships had ever brought her happiness. Madame Zarina was right about so many
things, and what she wouldn’t give for a little more of that protection the old gypsy had wished
on her.

If she was to die tonight, at least she had learned her lesson. The thought of dying made
her sad. She wasn’t ready to die. She wanted to go back to New York, to follow her heart this
time around and pursue fashion design, find a nice young man, and start over fresh. She wasn’t
going to carry anymore past baggage into her new life. All she needed was a second chance.

Theno had him pinned beneath the full weight of his body but he was still smiling. "Who are you?"

"Someone from your past, that came from the same place you did."

"You know me?"

"More than you do."

If this person knew who he was it would be better to keep him alive. That didn't mean Theno wanted him anywhere near the girls. When Theno tried to drag the man up, he managed to slipout of his grasp and hit him hard against the floor. It was enough to make Theno stop to catch his breath.

"Still feeling hungry for her, old friend?" The man said,

"She is a fascinating creature. Like a butterfly. You know what happens to butterflies that are handled to roughly."

"I won't let you hurt her." Theno clenched his fists, turning to glare at him.

"It's not me you should worry about. You don't know what kind of damage you have caused, so you don't know how dangerous you are to them." He let his smile slip a moment.

"There is no such thing as a gentle troll."

Without knowing who he was, Theno couldn't be sure if that was the truth. His imagination brought up one possibility after another, each darker and more disgusting than the last. The things he saw were horrible, but the things he felt was worse. He might have enjoyed the sickness in his old life, reveled in the misery. He could be a monster.

"You are a liar. You have come here to trick me."

"My friend." The intruder extended a hand and a smile to him. I could help you remember who you are. Give you all the details you want in exchange for the location of the door.

They were not friends, they could not be. He could not be the same as such a creature. "No, you do not know me. This is just another trick."

"Don't you remember the good times we had? The fun?" He stepped back a few steps and shrugged." I guess not, but we could create new fun here. There are more than enough of them to share."

The Name Of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss BOOK REVIEW!!!

                                                                  Amazon ** B&N

Title: The Name Of The Wind

Author: Patrick Rothfuss

Published: DAW Books

My name is Kvothe.

I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.

You may have heard of me.

Born into a traveling troupe family Kvothe has always been a different sort of child, with his bright red locks and beautiful green eyes he has always stood out among the other performers. You see Kvothe is very smart for his age and it shows when he meets an older gentleman during his families travels that has the ability to do sympathy (which is a form of magic used in the story) which he has only heard about in stories but never really seen in person. The man joins the traveling troupe in exchange for his help with odds and ins. Kvothe takes a liking to the new stranger and becomes quite interested in the use of sympathy. He has wanted to join the University to learn from the masters how to master sympathy but since that future seems far fetch for someone like him, Kvothe asks the new stranger to teach him a some things just get him started on the right path.

Kvothe took to learning the basics of sympathy quickly but didn't possess all of the knowledge of it's use before the stranger decided to go his own way leaving Kvothe with just a valuable book of knowledge in sympathy, but there is still so much out there that he hasn't even scraped the surface of yet. One day while off on his own doing his own thing for a bit Kvothe comes face to face with a very powerful enemy that people have only talked about in legends that will intern leaving him with the hardest lesson of all, the path to his dreams would be a difficult and heartbreaking road.

This is how legends are made but just know that not everything is as glorious as it seems from afar and greatness comes at a pricey cost.

Rating

Thoughts: I read this book because I saw it circling around the Book Tube community with the phrase that it was much like Harry Potter. I will agree with them only half way, it is somewhat like Harry Potter in the way that there is a school that teaches a sort of magic but I feel like this story goes farther than Harry Potter does and doesn't just center around just the school. The world in the story is very rich with characters and personality but never lets you forget that the world is a cruel place and isn't just sunshine and roses for everyone. I got very attached to the main character as well as some of the other smaller characters and I wish that the whole series were done and can be read because it's a story you don't want to be left hanging with. I will leave you with one warning though, this is an adult to mature teenager book and should not be taken lightly and I will ask that if you do read the book then don't go into the story expecting everything to be just like HP because this story kind of stands apart from the one magic school most know and love.

Family Matters By Pierre Meuron MINI BOOK REVIEW!

                                                                      ** Amazon **

Title: Family Matters

Author: Pierre Meuron

Published: Strategic Book Publishing & Rights Agency, LLC

This is a smaller book that focuses on the journey one family has taken through there lives. Many things happen in a families lifetime that can create memories of love, happiness, and heartache. Through little stories and some verse the book shows you bits and pieces throughout the author's family as well as the author's life growing up.

Rating:

Thoughts: I was asked to review this book in the return for an honest review, this review is just my opinion. Now that is out of the way I will just cut right to the chase, I was not a far of this book. It is a very small book and had great potential but was poorly executed. The transition through short stories and poetry was jumbled and didn't really make sense. I found myself a couple of times asking myself " what the heck is going on"?! This book is very small and almost seems like it was just bits and pieces of things that were taken from a much longer book. The only problem was that there isn't a longer book so you are left reading a book that is like cliffsnotes of the author's life. The concept was there but the writing fell through.

~ Book Excerpt ~

My escort pushes me. “Pick up the pace, kid.” I stumble on a sharp rock and cut my toe. It hurts more than it should and I pull up to face him, fists curled at my side. I’ve grown about a foot since my sixteenth birthday, which means I can stare him down, eye to eye. He just smirks. How about I smash your nose? For a minute the urge is so powerful, my pulse pounds against my throat and red spots blur my vision.

Don’t do anything stupid, Reed. Pick your battles. The voice in my head is my dad’s, so I listen. We climb aboard a rusty hybrid bus parked in front of the bombed-out terminal. “Welcome,” says the autopilot. It’s one of the retro models, formed like a human, with LED eyes and everything. When magnetic tracks were first installed, citizens didn’t trust computers to maneuver vehicles safely along roadways. At least that’s what my grandmother told me. Humanoid pilots were designed to make them feel safer. Pretty soon, people had more important things to worry about. My escort takes a seat behind the pilot, but I keep going. Only one other passenger is on the bus — a girl with long blond hair who sits in the fifth row, pressed against the window. Bruises swell on her left cheekbone and along her jaw. Her lip is crusted with blood and her right eyelid is swollen shut. Nausea washes over me, along with fresh anger. “Sit!” our escort barks. The girl flinches. I take a seat across from her and shift toward the window. The door squeaks closed and the bus lurches forward. We travel on an old freeway so desolate, we don’t encounter a single other transport. I wish I was calm enough to sleep — so numb to the government’s strong-arm tactics, they no longer get to me. Instead I stare past the landscape and try not to shake. Try not to relive my nightmare or think about how it felt to wake up with a gun to my head. I imagine a different outcome. Fighting back — or breaking out of the state home before they showed up. If only.

“If I leave, will you kiss him? Or any other humans?” the boy asked.

“I didn’t plan on kissing anything that wasn’t human, but if a cute angel comes along I might change my mind.” Rune gave him a cheeky smile.

He made a face and clenched his hands. With a loud sigh and a stomp of his boot, he reached for her hand. Rune glared at him, but her face softened when she saw how pained his expression was. She didn’t back off when he moved closer.

“We don’t even know each other,” he mumbled. His fingers brushed her cheek, then her lips as he searched her eyes. “Say it’s all right.”

Strangely, she wasn’t uncomfortable with the idea. This guy was possibly the first ethereal her age she’d come across. He might be a little curt, but he was also gorgeous, and his touch felt welcome on her skin.

Unable to keep herself from eyeing his mouth, the desire to kiss him turned to an ache.

“Yes.” She inhaled a ragged breath and her hands slithered around his neck, her fingers winding themselves in his hair. “I’m shaking,” she said, still fixated on his lips.

“Me too. It’s because we should have already done this at our age. It’ll be more intense be—”

“Shh.” She finished the sound by pressing her lips into his.

The gentle start became a heated wrestle of hot mouths. Rune drew him deeper and he pulled her tight against his body. Her nerves screamed at her.

More.

Rune lost all sense of being separate. Her spirit welcomed him, opening up to expose her essence. A sweet, icy fire burned through her mouth into her body, igniting her cells and quenching a fierce thirst. It felt like she was inhaling menthol and liquid sugar straight into her veins. The energy between them slowed to a stop and they broke apart, instantly back in reality. Rune fell against the wall, breathless and dazed with shock. Her back felt all tingly, a cold sort of tickle that raced across her skin. The boy didn’t look so harmless now. The whites of his eyes had been completely swallowed by black. All that was left of his irises was a thin ring.

“When they said intense I never thought…” He leaned heavily on the hall table.

“Your eyes,” Rune said in a fragile voice.

“They’ll change back.”

Still trembling, Rune slid down the wall to the floor. That was not what kissing was supposed to be like. She was obviously delirious. Someone must have spiked the vodka. That or this house had a serious hallucinogenic mold problem.

I was born and raised in Michigan (just look for the giant mitten on the map—it’ll likely throw a snowball at you). I spent most of my time in Michigan, but while in the army got to call KS, SC, MO, and CA home for awhile as well.

As a kid my family moved around a lot. Try spending both your freshman and senior years at new schools (yeah, loads of fun). I could’ve changed my name to “new girl”.

I love writing for teens because those are the years I remember falling in love with most of my favorite books. Some of the authors I couldn’t put down were L.J. Smith, Christopher Pike, R.L. Stine, Richie Tankersley Cusick, Joan Lowery Nixon, Lois Duncan, amongst several others.

My husband and I have a large family. There are six kids total! So we have LOTS of fun on vacations (although hours on the road, cooped up in the Expedition is kind of stressful—although we pass the time with MAD LIBS and hoping no one gets carsick).

Book Excerpt!

Growling under my breath, I bend down and begin shoving my stuff back into my bag.

“Here, you forgot this,” a deep voice says from behind me. Still crouched, I spin on the balls of my feet and immediately fall flat on my ass when I see who’s behind me.

Standing above me is Max. My Max. But that’s not possible, right? Maybe I’m having a psychotic break; the stress of the series is causing me to hallucinate.

Max bends down, bringing us to eye level. His face is millimeters from mine. He lets out a breath and it washes over me. Actual breath. From his lungs. In. My. Face. I gulp in air, finally able to breathe, and that’s a little better. I blink.

“Huh?” I croak. Brilliant.

“I said you forgot this,” he responds, his voice filled with laughter as he waves a tampon in front of my face like a magic wand.

Goddammit, it’s a super.

My face fills with so much heat I’m surprised it doesn’t singe my eyebrows straight off. Jumping to my feet, I scrutinize him carefully. He follows my movements, standing to his full height, and holy hell he’s tall.

At least a foot taller than my 5’4.” Just like I’d imagined. His hair is a dark auburn, so dark it looks like spilled blood at midnight; so dark it looks black until the sun hits it. His eyes are honey-brown, almost supernatural in their color.

It’s supposed to be unreal because he’s not real. What the frick?!

His face looks as if it’s carved from granite. In fact, every inch of him is defined. Light golden skin is stretched tightly over his muscles, and even though he is wearing a loose work out tank and track pants, I can tell he’s hard all over. I can tell because that’s how I wrote him. I’ve known him for almost ten years now.

“Are you ok?” he asks, his eyes crinkling at the corners with concern.

So many thoughts and words, too bad they’re all trapped in my throat. My hand rises on its own violation and… I poke him.

I poke his chest.

I touch him.

Holy effing shit!

“Oh my God!” I whisper-yell. Am I dreaming? I pinch myself hard and yelp. Nope, I’m awake. “Oh my God. This is not happening!”

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller BOOK REVIEW!

                                                                 Amazon ** B&N

Title: The Song of Achilles

Author: Madeline Miller

This book is the retelling of the story of Achilles and the war of Troy.

In a world were the people are at the mercy of Kings and the Kings are at the mercy of the Gods, a young prince is just trying to become what his father wants in a prince. Patroclus isn't what you would call a typical prince. He hates fighting and he isn't much as far as physical strength goes making people fear his weakness. Patroclus spends his time alone mostly roaming the land when one day fate changed for him forever. After the death of a fellow child by the hand of Patroclus he is exiled to the land of the Greeks. Taken in by the local king Patroclus is just like the other orphans of the castle in the since that is just trained to be another soldier. Patroclus's lack of fighting ability makes him stand out to everyone including the prince of the castle Achilles. It doesn't take long for Achilles and Patroclus to become good friends, sharing everything with each other but the connection between the two seems to grow stronger to the point were they can't be without each other. A love sparks between the two that even time can't come between.

As they grow up together the bond between the two is stronger than ever and it would seem that a life in peace is in their future....until Helen is stolen and taken to Troy. The battle calls for a war hero to help with the rescue of the queen and Achilles is called upon. Patroclus not wanting to be left alone decides to follow even though he isn't much of a fighter.

Troy become torn apart with battle and raids for years they fight loosing much and gaining little. It would seem that the two will never return to the peaceful life they once lived. The weight of the war with the blood spilled threatens to tear the two apart but a love so deep can not be broken...or can it?

Rating:

Thoughts: This book isn't what I thought it was going to be. I knew it was a retelling of Achilles and the war of Troy but I still expected there to be more history in the story. There was some history but most of the story is heaped with fantasy aspects complete with mythological creatures as well as Gods and Goddesses. I also wasn't expecting the whole book to be a love story but that is mostly what it was, a lot of love and not as much action. Never the less I did like the story I just gave it three stars because it isn't what I truly wanted it to be.

Quotes

“He is more worth to you, perhaps. But the stranger is someone else's friend and brother. So which life is more important?”  - The Song of Achilles

“I stopped watching for ridicule, the scorpion's tail hidden in his words. He said what he meant; he was puzzled if you did not. Some people might have mistaken this for simplicity. But is it not a sort of genius to cut always to the heart?”  - The Song of Achilles
